For the European premiere of the film, NAU was commissioned to design the red carpet event and after party.

Roland Emmerich’s film 2012 paints a heavy visual effects driven, world end scenario. Earth’s entire crust shifts, instigating gigantic tsunami waves and massive floods.

The red carpet design translates these main themes of earth displacement and flooding into an impressive set design. Its key set elements being the press wall and a tsunami installation. Both are surrounded by minor earth segments, cracked and shifted, forming an abstract interpretation of the torn earth surface. Cracks are filled with water pushed in from the tsunami wave. Subtle video projections of words and symbols related to the film add another layer.

The after party manifests the final act of the event. While the red carpet builds up excitement, the film marks the dramatic climax. The after party symbolizes the final rescue. Warm colors and dimmed lighting create a lounge atmosphere for the guests to relax following the film’s visual bombardment.
